I spend about a third of the lesson on specific technique work and I always encourage students to bring in their own material that we can work on as well. It's very important to get to know the student's goals and inspirations. That way, I can focus on the skills they need. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
