I have most recently had the opportunity to teach a college course at CalArts, private lessons to college level students at the institute, and group voice classes to K-3rd graders through the Community Arts Partnership. While I sometimes recommend rep for certain students, I like to begin with songs that are meaningful to them, provided that I see no way it could be harmful to their voice. If the student feels insecure (all too common of a problem) I try to help them feel relaxed and comfortable while boosting their confidence. I believe that every student is different, and that is important to understand each student’s passions and interests.  It is important to find out how each student learns, and to motivate him or her to improve, grow, and be passionate about music.  I do not want to only teach the notes on the page; I want to instill a lifelong love of music and a basic knowledge of music theory.  Learning the goals and aspirations of each of my students is very important to me, as I know that performing music should be about joy and self expression. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for what they are learning.  I therfore believe that it is important for each student to progress at his or her own pace.  Acknowledging accomplishments of goals that have been completed helps fuel the desire to progress and learn more. My lessons are a lot of fun because I have high standards but also maintain a light hearted atmosphere. I teach music to students of all levels and ages. I currently teach Music Theory at the Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP) and beginning violin at the Metropolitan Youth Symphony (MYS).
