From a young age I have been an active teacher. Advanced for my age I vividly remember tutoring my classmates in the Fourth grade. Throughout the rest of my schooling I served in some sort of volunteer tutor capacity, helping classmates and younger students. While in undergrad at DePauw University I served as an Orientation/First-Year Seminar Mentor, helping first year students adjust to campus academic and social life. My teaching experience began in 2011. A friend of mine had bought a guitar and did not know a single thing about the instrument. he asked me if I could teach him how to play. After a few weeks of methods that I taught him and, exercises he was able to play the guitar without frustration. For beginning children, I will usually select Hal Leonard or the Bastien series combined with appropriate solo repertoire. For intermediate students and adults who are beginners, I select from the Suzuki method or Hanon books combined with repertoire. I also like to find out the students' interests (classical, pop, musicals, and so forth) to select combinations of music that will be most engaging for them. I like to create very clear imagery that builds over time. The voice is not something we can see or touch, so I often joke that singing is about learning Jedi mind tricks that help us achieve a healthy technique. I like to incorporate theory/musicianship and some piano into my lessons to create a well rounded understanding of singing as a musician.
