Most of the students I've taught have had a background in music through singing in choirs, etc. Other students have had a limited musical background. At whatever the ability level or background, I always try to introduce appropriate solo repertoire to which the student can relate, as well as introducing songs that will aid in teaching proper vocal technique and proper diction. I usually start with breathing exercises and vocalises for all students. I also use the exercise books Concone and Sieber. After the student has grasped the breathing and the coordination of the vocalises we move on to repertoire that is age appropriate. I encourage my students to sing in Italian as this helps them to acquire a proper technique because Italian uses pure vowels. I have studied with some great teachers and feel like I need to pass on those methods to the next generation of musicians. Read More

I am familiar with many different series of method books (Faber, Bastien, Piano Town, Thompson, etc.), but will determine what the student needs based on their age and how much they know about music in general. Some school-aged children may have been exposed to music classes before they come to me. I am happy to hear about any school district that has chosen not to cut music education from its curriculum!   Music lessons will certainly broaden the students knowledge of music.  It has been proven through scientific study that the study of music will improve the individuals cognitive ability and aids in brain development.  Children who study music develop higher math and problem solving skills.    Age is not a factor as we are never to old to learn.  My students range in age from 5 years old to well into their 70’s, many of whom simply want to improve their skills or recapture the joy of making music.  The study and enjoyment of music can and often becomes a life long adventure whether its just for fun or as a career.
