I believe I have a laid back and flexible style of teaching. I try to understand each of my students musical needs and desires and clearly understand and respect that no two students are exactly alike. I try to share my passion for music and instill the same in all my students. I try to create a balance between theory and actual technique that will create an overall well balanced musician. I believe three elements of teaching make an outstanding teacher: reflecting on practice, fostering meaningful and positive relationships, and emphasizing student engagement. Teaching is a challenging and often relentless profession. Therefore, it is imperative that teachers reflect upon their practice to build on what works in the classroom and also to modify what needs improvement. Nurturing personal and meaningful relationships is also key. When students and their parents believe that a teacher is invested in a child's learning and future, we find growth. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 15 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 10 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical, gospel, christian, jazz and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. I've tended to and have taught around 250 different people since 2013. Although I've typically worked K - 12th grade students, I've taught older students in the range of their 40's - 50's. While working with School of Rock, I was an assistant band director, responsible for coming up with set lists for the youth band, teaching them the material and eventually having them play at a live venue after proving their proficiency. If the students already had books from prior music instructor, we pick up from the last lessons after answering questions to make sure the students thoroughly understand the previous lessons from the previous chapters. For beginning students, I've used the Mel Bay's modern bass and guitar methods, James Bastien piano library, Essential Elements for wind instruments, Advanced Rock drumming and Master theory books by Charles S. Peters and Paul Yoder or any music books and online documents download by the the student. Read More

Getting my students to express themselves and achieve their own style is my main goal, but really identifying with their instrument goes much further.I am only going to show you the way, showing you the options and above all giving you the tools to function and be able to walk it. Music is something that is enjoyed and an escape, it does not have to represent torture or an obligation, that is the central point of all this... and we go back to world peace, but they ask you to write too much and I'm a music teacher, I don't teach poetry hahaha.
