Instruments: Piano Guitar Trumpet Trombone Recorder Euphonium
I tailor lessons to students' interests, but don't neglect the fundamental building blocks of playing. I encourage creativity and experimentation, touching on a variety of musical elements in each lesson. Read More

I began teaching voice as a school project when I was 14 years old and realized that I I loved it! From then on, I always kept my hand in teaching throughout my high school and college years. I started teaching full time, at which point I added piano and speaking to my repertoire. I have experience as a performing singer, session musician and actor and I I love helping my students get the most out their lessons, whether they simply want to learn their instrument to the best of their ability, or learn more about writing music and the industry. My students have gone from 5 year old beginners to very accomplished piano and guitar players. The student gets to pick the first two songs of the lesson, and I pick the next 2. That way, they get a lot of choice for the lessons. With the pandemic, the students have been very consistent with not missions lessons, which is pushing their progress as well. I, glad that I can provide a much needed outlet for them right now with things being a little different. Read More

I like to have my students progress to a point where they feel comfortable picking a song of their choice, transcribing it as accurately as possible, and playing it. For advanced students: there is no set structure for advanced students, as their requests and sets of strengths and weaknesses are so individually specific that I have to create a specific lesson plan for each student. However, one theme that I love to introduce advanced musicians to in terms of music theory are the psycho-acoustics and emotional manipulation of specific chord progressions, modes, cadences, and modal interchange. Instruments: Piano
I like piano lessons to be enjoyable while still providing an atmosphere of learning. Exactly how a lesson unfolds varies from student to student in order to fit the needs and desires of each individual student. Each student and I will determine what pace works best for that student. We will also work together to determine how to construct our lessons so we can introduce new information in ways that best help that particular student understand the concepts. Read More

Education is a central part of my life and will continue to be for my whole career. When I'm not teaching music, I teach English to kids living in China over the Internet! I have been teaching music for several years in individual, group and clinic settings. I recently graduated from the University of Iowa where I was lucky enough to study many different kinds of music. I became interested in Caribbean music and steelpan and through the University and had the great experience of competing in Panorama in Trinidad Tobago. Read More

My methods used all depend on the student. I like to assess the students intentions with the instrument as well as their skill level before creating a unique lesson plan to help them progress efficiently while still enjoying the same eagerness to learn as they did in their first lesson. There is a slightly different method for each person, especially when you have to consider things like if they are playing fingerstyle, or with a pick. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice time should not be about clock-work rigidity but about creativity. Keep in mind that music is first and foremost for your own personal enjoyment. So, get creative by making your practice space comfortable and inspiring. Whatever is meaningful to you. Typically it is best to go down the list of things to do. Start with the warm-ups: scales, arpeggios. As guitarist or pianist it is important to get your hands moving. After the warm segue to study book and/or your chosen solo piece. But if you're feeling inspired right in the moment and want to jump into the solo, then don't waste it on scales! You can go back to that later.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
As parents, we are fairly in tuned to our child's needs, wants or aspirations. So, when you frequently see them playing an instrument of their own design, that is usually a pretty good indicator your child is ready for music lessons. Another sign is conversation. Does your child talk about playing an instrument not just in passing, but often? Does your child frequently ask to hear a particular song, genre, or an artist repeated over and over again? (like Taylor Swift, or do they love to hear Bach, which is true because I did) Do you catch a private moment and observe the child seeking out certain kinds of music to listen to? If so, these are just a few indicators that it may be time to cultivate that interest through music lessons
When will I start to see results?
Music is like learning a language. First, we learn nouns (notes), then verbs (scales and arpeggios), and soon we are learning full sentences (a melodic line) to reading a whole book (a solo piece or song). To the degree a student applies themselves to their practice time, is the degree by which you should start to see results by the following week after each lesson. Everyone is different. Everyone has a different level of talent--there's no shame in that. I have seen students with not much talent, yet their passion and drive to succeed made them better players than the most talented! Absolutely true! Because I make sure everyone goes at their own pace, results can be leaps and bounds or incremental. But one thing is certain: the student does come away with more "tools in their tool belt" than when they came in.
