I specialize in finger style guitar therfore i like to spend a small portion introducing students to different kinds of picking techniques. Ialsoexplore improvisation and song structure concepts in variousdifferent styles of music. I like to dedicate a portion of the end of the lesson time to something the student has really wanted to learn that week; like a specific song, lick, or concept . Hope to hear from you, thanks! Once an adequate amount of fundamental material has been grasped, I like to have the student select songs or pieces that they already know of and learn to play simple translations of them that I will prepare. For intermediate students: heavy rigor with more complicated exercise in the form of etudes (piano), vocal runs (voice), and picking exercises (bass/guitar) is encouraged, with an introduction to more complicated music theory and harmony. I was my own first student. I began teaching myself how to play the piano over 10 years ago. Throughout this process I learned how to approach some typically confusing topics in much more digestible ways. A benefit to starting out as a self taught musician is that I had to learn how to make sense of things myself rather than memorizing information that a teacher fed me. A main focus of mine as a teacher is encouraging regular practice routines where the student can solidify the information we discuss in our lessons as well as uncover new questions they may have about the subject. Music is fun, and my goal is to give each student the tools, knowledge and inspiration to explore the wonderful world of music. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
Voice- Depending on how long the lesson is we work on vocal warmups then work on a song. In a 30 min lesson we do vocal warmups for 10 minutes then work on a song fir 20 minutes.Learning the proper vocal technique. Piano-Go through lesson book and other performance books also work on theory if the child is younger and has a short attention span. I love teaching all ages and all styles of music. Read More
Instruments: Piano Drums
For Beginners, I usually begin with very rudimentary stick control patterns to get used to how the stick feels in the hands. As the lessons progress, then I will instruct patterns on drumset if wanted. The student can request whatever style of drumming they would like to delve into, anywhere from latin percussion to jazz drumset. I like to keep lessons fun and engaging for students of all skill levels and ages, so along with assignments I will come up with improvised grooves and patterns on the spot Read More

My piano students also get some coaching and experience in singing (if they want to) -- I can help you to sing alongwith what you're playing, if you'd like to be a singer who can accompany yourself on the piano. DRUMS - You'll learn how to separate and control the four body parts (two hands, two feet) quickly, and then create a beat you can really feel -- we'll emphasize making it sound like music, not reading complex drum notation. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice time should not be about clock-work rigidity but about creativity. Keep in mind that music is first and foremost for your own personal enjoyment. So, get creative by making your practice space comfortable and inspiring. Whatever is meaningful to you. Typically it is best to go down the list of things to do. Start with the warm-ups: scales, arpeggios. As guitarist or pianist it is important to get your hands moving. After the warm segue to study book and/or your chosen solo piece. But if you're feeling inspired right in the moment and want to jump into the solo, then don't waste it on scales! You can go back to that later.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
As parents, we are fairly in tuned to our child's needs, wants or aspirations. So, when you frequently see them playing an instrument of their own design, that is usually a pretty good indicator your child is ready for music lessons. Another sign is conversation. Does your child talk about playing an instrument not just in passing, but often? Does your child frequently ask to hear a particular song, genre, or an artist repeated over and over again? (like Taylor Swift, or do they love to hear Bach, which is true because I did) Do you catch a private moment and observe the child seeking out certain kinds of music to listen to? If so, these are just a few indicators that it may be time to cultivate that interest through music lessons
When will I start to see results?
Music is like learning a language. First, we learn nouns (notes), then verbs (scales and arpeggios), and soon we are learning full sentences (a melodic line) to reading a whole book (a solo piece or song). To the degree a student applies themselves to their practice time, is the degree by which you should start to see results by the following week after each lesson. Everyone is different. Everyone has a different level of talent--there's no shame in that. I have seen students with not much talent, yet their passion and drive to succeed made them better players than the most talented! Absolutely true! Because I make sure everyone goes at their own pace, results can be leaps and bounds or incremental. But one thing is certain: the student does come away with more "tools in their tool belt" than when they came in.
