I am very goal-oriented in my teaching because it provides not only motivation but proof for my students. In that vain, it's important for me to understand why a student is taking lessons so that we can effectively work together to progress. Wether the goal is to familiarize a young student with note reading and musical ideas, to help a musical hobbyist learn their favorite hits, or to train technique for refined classical music performance - I take a tailored approach to each student's instruction. I generally choose to use Faber as a method book for all my beginning students, using the age appropriate track for each student ranging from too young to read yet to adult learners. I believe that both the lesson book and the theory books are highly important and necessary. Depending on the student and their wants and needs, other books for each level may be added. Once a basic comprehension of reading music and technique have been achieved, I like to branch out into other repertoire of whichever style or styles are most interesting to the student. Read More

I blend the tried-and-true poise of classical technique with holistic approaches to satisfy two purposes: 1) the traditional desire to hone skill with practice and discipline, and 2) the psychological development of the student's independent musicianship. Music without expression is only sport. While technique, exercise, rigor, and history are essential in order to develop the deepest possible understanding of music, I aim to go beyond this to shape the independent expressionism of each student. My teaching style is free flowing and depends on the specific student. Everybody's experience with music is different and not everybody will pick things up as quickly as others so you must meet them where they are. Music is nerve-racking at first because expressing ourselves isn't something that is always encouraged so I look for something they are interested in to start off. From there, we build on musicality and find their original response to music. Read More

Once a three-year-old banging out chords on a piano, now a thriving cellist, pianist, percussionist, composer, and amateur recording engineer, my name is Rhett "Ret/R.D.C." North and I am a passionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic instructor who loves getting people excited about music! I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Composition and career certification in Music Technology, and my favorite part in everything I do is joining musicians, from beginner to master, in the joy of learning music. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Practice time should not be about clock-work rigidity but about creativity. Keep in mind that music is first and foremost for your own personal enjoyment. So, get creative by making your practice space comfortable and inspiring. Whatever is meaningful to you. Typically it is best to go down the list of things to do. Start with the warm-ups: scales, arpeggios. As guitarist or pianist it is important to get your hands moving. After the warm segue to study book and/or your chosen solo piece. But if you're feeling inspired right in the moment and want to jump into the solo, then don't waste it on scales! You can go back to that later.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
As parents, we are fairly in tuned to our child's needs, wants or aspirations. So, when you frequently see them playing an instrument of their own design, that is usually a pretty good indicator your child is ready for music lessons. Another sign is conversation. Does your child talk about playing an instrument not just in passing, but often? Does your child frequently ask to hear a particular song, genre, or an artist repeated over and over again? (like Taylor Swift, or do they love to hear Bach, which is true because I did) Do you catch a private moment and observe the child seeking out certain kinds of music to listen to? If so, these are just a few indicators that it may be time to cultivate that interest through music lessons
When will I start to see results?
Music is like learning a language. First, we learn nouns (notes), then verbs (scales and arpeggios), and soon we are learning full sentences (a melodic line) to reading a whole book (a solo piece or song). To the degree a student applies themselves to their practice time, is the degree by which you should start to see results by the following week after each lesson. Everyone is different. Everyone has a different level of talent--there's no shame in that. I have seen students with not much talent, yet their passion and drive to succeed made them better players than the most talented! Absolutely true! Because I make sure everyone goes at their own pace, results can be leaps and bounds or incremental. But one thing is certain: the student does come away with more "tools in their tool belt" than when they came in.
