I started teaching at the age of 17 sharing my knowledge with children of my coworkers before I had formal education. Since then, I have had the opportunity to be a guitar instructor at Camp Lonehollow and have had private students during my time as a guitar pedigodgy student. A strong understanding of the fretboard and consistent quality practice is essential for any aspiring musician. I encourage my students to enter competitions and find chances to perform on their own. For beginning students I like to start with proper technique and basic music theory such as reading music and key signatures. Once the student is comfortable with the instrument we will begin to work or more advance techniques and music theory. I use various instructional books depending on the students level and interest in order to teach them theory and keep them interested and enjoying learning. For adults, I like to find out what their goals with music are, whether it is just a hobby, or something they plan on doing professionally and how in depth they are looking to learn, and then guide my instruction accordingly. We will mostly learn things that you can practically apply to any gig and that also help develop their overall understanding of their role as a drummer on stage and in a group setting. Knowing this is crucial for any aspiring musician because you will always be on stage with other people and it's important to know your role in those situations. Of course we will also have fun and I always make sure to make room for just fun things the student wants to learn that may not be super applicable. Read More

My teaching experience is primarily from instructing at a band camp for multiple summers. Working with beginner level middle school students, it was my job to help them choose songs to play, learn their individual parts, and help them rehearse as a band. Not only was it satisfying to see how quickly they improved through practice, but by the end of each session, the students seemed exponentially more motivated to pursue their musical ambitions. When I begin with a new student, I generally jam and analyze my student's abilities, skill level, techniques and interests/desires in music styles. When I have a good idea about my student's ability and skill level, we begin with focusing on what needs to be improved. For beginner children, I like to focus on the fundamentals and keep interest with keeping things creative, exciting and fun! For adults, I like to analyze my student's musical interests and try to associate lessons in that style of repertoire. Read More
