Teaching for me is about finding a balance. The way I approach a lesson consists of focusing solely on the students goals and aspirations and working on that, but also demonstrating yourself to be a good musician and teacher who your student trusts and receives inspiration from. That said, I like to find out and sometimes predict what students would like to do with the guitar and start from there. Read More

For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. Read More

First of all, theory is extremely important to learn music. By learning and understanding theory you will realize and appreciate music as the amalgam between art and science. Music is heavily influenced by math. Music is science of the soul. Secondly, I make a lot of emphasis on improvisation as well. As soon as you understand the fretboard and your finger get used to playing, then improvisation connects your fingers with your soul, your muse, your inspiration. Read More

Ive been teaching private guitar lessons since graduating from NYU Im 2009. My lessons draw upon the music theory concepts that I mastered in college, as well as my extensive experience playing in my own band. I straddle the line between a trained approach and an organic, intuitive approach. You will learn to use music theory as a foundation to fully develop your own style. You need to learn the rules first in order to break the rules! Read More

I'm new to teaching on this level, but I do have some prior experience, most notably a paid tenure teaching a family friend for a summer. My student was very young and a novice, so I primarily utilized both formal methods for the understanding of fundamentals of music theory and technique, though I also helped her learn to play a few popular songs at her request. Letting students pursue their own personal interests in music in addition to teaching them the fundamentals is important to me, but with more experienced students I generally tend to focus more on improvisation and harmony as opposed to sightreading. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, and I have been routinely teaching students in my home studio and online for the previous eight years. One of the major elements I want to emphasize for younger students is encouraging frequent practice on a consistent schedule, as it assists the student advance and developing a passion for the instrument. I've also discovered that combining classical and modern music can help pupils appreciate the piano and drive them to practice and learn more. Read More

Setting goals is a very important practice for teaching. I am very easy going, kind and understanding. However, I expect there to be effort on the part of the student. I believe praise to be a better motivator than stoicism and I always make sure my students know when they are doing a good job and improving. There is nothing more rewarding than to see a student have a breakthrough on their instrument. Read More
