I am a passionate and driven teacher whose focus is always on my students' musical goals and development. I focus on roots American styles: the blues, early rock, bluegrass, country, folk, and jazz. I graduated with a degree in Guitar Performance from Lewis Clark College, where I studied performance under renowned Portlandguitarist Dan Balmer and music theory under Portland pianist Susan Smith. Authentic and time-honored musical styles are my emphasis and serve as the foundations upon which my performances and lessons are based. Read More

Traditionally, I like to teach without a method book but each student varies in their wants or needs. I like to start my most basic lessons with learning the open chords and connecting them with rhythm. From there, playing favorite songs and even writing some progressions maybe! Depending on what the student's goal is, we can learn notes on the fretboard or how to read music notation for the instrument. Read More

I feel that if a student is just banging away at notes without getting the big picture of how everything works it can be frustrating and fruitless. I like to teach as we play a song. I think you are able to benefit by using the theory and techniques as the song progresses. I can teach out of a book if the student/parent would prefer. I do customize songs to the age and interests of the student. Read More

I have taught private and group lessons to 1st grade students all the way through Adult Centers that reflect ages 55-80 years. I've had at least three students win scholarships to Berklee School of Music in Boston, all of whom have gone on through a master's program. I have played in Rock, Country, Jazz, and Latin Groups. An original tune of mine was recorded by Elton John to showcase one of his singers. Read More

Whether the student desires to learn classical or contemporary styles of music, goals will be met through the traditional, one-on-one teaching style. Students can also expect me to be friendly, prepared, and motivated to have a great lesson every time, and I expect the same from my students! I encourage them to find joy in what they do, to take pride in their skill and strive to develop and strong sense of ownership in their art from which flows a stronger sense of individuality and personal confidence. I generally split lessons into three sections, 1/3 with chords, 1/3 scales, 1/3 with songs, but every student is different, for example, If your goal is to strictly learn chords to sing folks songs over, I will emphasize more chord reading and learning time. If you want to play leads, I will spend more time emphasizing scales to help you learn how to improvise. There are also other excercises we can do like rhythm reading (just with clapping, no instrument) transcription/listening, and harmonic analysis. Read More

The approach I use to advance student learning is fun and laid back - yet direct and studious. I believe in the power of mentoring students and adults. Every student is different and has their own way of learning and growing, even as we get older. There is always room for improvement. At your first lesson we can talk about what makes sense in terms of practice week to week and will continue to see what it takes as time goes on. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
