For all my students, my lessons focus on three key areas of playing: technique, fluency, and repertoire. Technique includes warmup exercises, chord vocabulary, and scales among other areas. Fluency includes some form of reading music and is catered to the goals of the student. Whether it be traditional sheet music, guitar tab, lead sheets or otherwise, we will develop skills in reading music that is relevant to a student's area of interest. Read More

My curriculum is entirely driven by the students needs. I don't believe that one blanket method works for all individuals. Therefore, I spend the early lessons getting to know the student and designing the layout for our lessons moving forward. There are definitely certain books that I have used to assist with teaching. These books are dependant on the level of the student. Some of these books are Ted Green's "Chord Chemistry", "Rythms Complete" by Bugs Bower, and the Hal Leonard guitar method books. Read More

I went to graduate school and became a teacher of guitar classes at Chelsea High School, teaching about 1800 students over nine years. Along the way I took up arranging for an ensemble of young string and wind players at my church I had learned tenor saxophone, which I play in this ensemble - and learned jazz and fingerstyle guitar. I am now teaching one-on-one so I can share my love of the guitar directly with students as a mentor has said, I enjoy reliving the excitement of my first musical discoveries by teaching new students, and helping more experienced students advance. for younger students, we usually work through a book together to understand the fundamentals of music before we start to approach more complex lessons. I tend to use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements as well as other series' depending on the student's level and musical interest. For adult lessons, I typically create a unique lesson plan that includes warmups, technique exercises, and the learning of songs or solos all dependent on that student's particular interests. I also co-lead an original Latin/Jazz project, Two Worlds, with drummer Rodrigo Bonelli and pianist Michael Shea. With this group, I released a full-length album called 'Stream of Stars' which is available in stores. Two Worlds has played festivals and clubs throughout the Northeastern U.S. including DROM, Miles Cafe, Shrine and Sugar Bar in New York City and Ryles Jazz Club, The Fireplace, The Beehive, and The Vernissage in Boston. When a new student comes in for their first lesson, I always make sure that they have a grasp of the fundamentals. Without the fundamentals it is very easy to develop poor technique that will at best limit them in what can be accomplished on the instrument, and at worst lead to pain or injury from playing. Once we are comfortable with the fundamentals I want to start making music with them as soon as possible. Read More

My teaching style ranges based on the needs of each student, but I consistently make sure to work towards challenging, but achievable goals with a clear, step by step, and enjoyable path towards them. I do this because I've seen far too many other instructors either overwhelm a student, or bore them to death. Both of which are the two most common reasons for why someone gives up an instrument.
