I am primarily a percussionist, with over 10 years of expierience playing and performing in jazz bands, marching bands, musical theatre, small ensembles, wind ensembles, and symphonies, and I was the principle percussionist for 2 years while I was in college. I also have 5 years of expierience on the trumpet, 15 years of guitar, as well as expierience with many other instruments. I feel each of my students are unique. I love watching my students' level of musical understanding progress. I love seeing the dedication and determination begin to heighten as the lessons progress. Within each lesson I point out areas that need to be worked on as well as areas of improvement. Seeing one's progress is the most important element to me for my students. With younger students, I focus on rhythm, simple ear training, and light reading. I will gradually introduce harmony and more intensive ear and rhythmic studies as the student progresses. I think it is important for students to apply their knowledge through performance opportunities and songwriting. In my first full-time teaching position, I was able to to lead the Greenland (AR) High School band to the ASBOA Sweepstakes Award, the highest honor for a school band in that state. I began teaching the guitar and beginner piano in 2012 after I graduated from UCSB and have been teaching in students’ homes and online since then. My teaching experience ranges from teaching adults who want to learn the fundamentals of classical guitar (beginning technique and sight-reading exercises) to teaching young kids interested in modern methods of playing, learning pop and rock songs, and playing solos. In 2015, I taught in afterschool programs, notably for Hancock Park Elementary School in Hancock Park, Los Angeles, for which I taught an excellent group of curious learners as we surveyed modern guitar methods, sight-reading, chords and harmonic progressions, and playing in duos.
