I aim to tailor my lesson plans to each students unique goals. The methods I use differ based on each persons aspirations and learning habits. I believe that the cello can be a beneficial addition to anyones life, whether it is being played for recreation/therapy, to explore and enjoy great music, or to challenge oneself and build discipline through rigorous practice. I normally use the Standard of Excellence method books for most of my students; however, I am open minded to adjusting to each individual student's musical needs, whether it be Jazz, Classical, or whatever style music the student is focusing on. For Drummers, I prefer the Haskell Harr Method, or the Buddy Rich Method Book, as well as the Breeze Easy Method Book. I started teaching in minneapolis Schmitt music through my undergrad with total beginners for 3 years which taught me a lot and then more during masters. Taught all ages at eastman community school when studying at Eastman and was a Studio teaching assistant for Steven Doanes studio and taught first years undergrad students in group technique classes and one on one repertoire lessons. Faculty eastman community music school teacher for two years and taught group lessons and one on one of mostly adult players and some university of Rochester science students that wanted to keep going with music as a hobby. In addition to this, I pride myself on teaching all students, how to best play popular music, using a full range of chords, not typically taught. But even if one method is widely used by famous educators and is believed to be fail-safe, for the one time this method does not work for a student, the teacher must be able to try something else. Perhaps most importantly, I make it a priority to include as much real music as possible from the start, so that the students experience musical playing early on.
