Usually in my lessons I like to hear the student play something from start to finish just so I can listen and take in what exactly a student's strengths and weaknesses are. Encouraging strengths, and praising accomplishments, is a great way to help a student to progress. My teaching experience dates back to when I was a senior in high school. I would teach local cellists ranging from Elementary School ages to College aged students. Outside of teaching cello, I spend my time as a Choir Director and a Religious Education Teacher. I believe in teaching future string musicians there is only one way to make the best sound and teaching how to do this from the beginning. I want the students to understand how their instrument works by demystifying the mechanics. My main foundations for my teaching are rooted in goal setting, collaboration, and engaging music learning. At the beginning of every semester, I like to evaluate the goals from the previous semester, talk about what progress has been made, and what the future goals are. I personally feel that many times students quit because they do not enjoy practicing at home week after week, so for me, collaboration either with students from school, other students in the studio, or in local music schools or orchestras is a must.
