I've found that keeping an open mind about methods is really helpful when dealing with beginning students, young and old. I've tought from various method series including Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Emily Wright's A Modern Cellist's Manual, Muller Rusch, and more. While I'm not a certifited Suzuki instructor, I do teach from the Suzuki method when students or parents request it. What's important is matching the right method to the right student which I tend to determine at our initial lesson. Read More

I am teaching the students by wide range from beginners to most advanced. I use Suzuki method combined with traditional teaching materials and traditional teaching methods for advanced students. For younger students, I mainly use Suzuki teaching method, combined with etudes, like Alwin Schroeder's 170 Foundation Studies. Teaching all age group students with scales as well. For older or advanced students, I teach mainly with traditional method, etudes, like Dotzauer, Franchomme, Merk, Kummer, Gruetzmacher, Piatti and Popper etc. Read More

I always make a point of meeting the student where they are at their development and building on that. My teaching philosophy is based primarily upon aiding the student in self-expression. While fundamental technique and repertoire are of course crucial in the pairing cellist's development, the ultimate goal is to provide the student with the means to use the instrument to further their own musical interests. With that in mind, whatever the student wishes to ultimately learn how to play, in whatever style, my goal is to give them the foundation to accomplish that. Read More

I embarked on my journey as a cello instructor during my undergraduate years, where both the Eastman School of Music and Northwestern University provided comprehensive pedagogy classes to hone our skills in teaching our chosen musical instruments professionally. Since establishing my home studio in 2016, teaching has evolved into a genuine passion of mine. My primary goal is to ensure that my students not only enjoy their time learning the cello with me but also glean valuable insights to carry beyond the classroom. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Strings Builder. Once student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate such as Suzuki for their first performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in or what goals they aim for. Based on their levels, I try to introduce repertoire which they might be interested in and to motivate them to engage themselves with the lessons and practicing in order to achieve what they want from learning music. I like to create goals with the student, not just for them. In other words, I make sure the student's opinion is always taken in consideration to ensure that every goal set is within reason and that the student genuinely thinks it is realistic for them. I encourage students to keep a practice journal where they write down the amount of time they practiced, what scale and technique exercise they practiced, and the pieces they practiced. Read More
