Once the fundamentals from those books have been understood, I will start the students on repertoire that is appropriate for their level. I began giving lessons in my 2nd semester in college. I have been able to meet people from all walks of life and given lessons to students from ages 3 to 68. I read a great amount of classical literature and study allot of history; I say this to acknowledge the fact that I don't only teach proficiency in the music discipline. At the age of 17, I flew to Hollywood, CA to attend Musicians Institute where I studied Bass Guitar Performance. Learning from and playing with some of the best musicians in the business was amazing. I left school to hit the road with my first professional band. I spent the next 20+ years writing, recording and touring all over the country. I was lucky enough to be in a few bands that landed indie recording contracts, which allowed me to tour nationally doing original music, with songs I had written being played on radio and on TV shows across the country. We can come up with a plan to help you define your goals, a practice plan to meet your needs, and I always encourage students to perform, enter auditions/competitions, and/or recitals, open mic nights, school ensembles, All State, Solo/Ensemble, out of school ensembles. Students will have many opportunities to perform, participate in workshops where we focus on certain techniques, certain types of music (i.e. fiddle, mariachi, jazz), learn improvisation, and meet guest artists. My cello instruction is separated by levels and books. Level 0-1 is in Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books 1 and 2. Level 1-2 is Rick Mooney's Position Pieces Book 1, as well as sheet music and books outside of that method book. Level 2-3 is Rick Mooney's Position Pieces Book 2 and sheet music, and 3+ will be Rick Mooney's Thumb Position books.
