The golden rule of teaching music for me is to always offer a challenge that the student can manage, whether it be a very small degree of difficulty or a larger degree of difficulty. Learning is its own reward and both are essential to nurture and sustain interest in learning to play an instrument. A students ability to absorb and retain information is an integral part of their evolving psychological and musical maturity. Read More

My teaching is strongly influenced by the Suzuki method and the teaching methods of Mimi Zweig and Susan Moses. I incorporate Dalcroze Eurhythmics and general music theory and ear training into each lesson. I believe that learning to play an instrument should be fun and enjoyable, while simultaneously stretching a childs musical imagination and growing their cello technique. At the heart of my teaching is the study of technique, for as ones technique improves, the musical rewards always increase. Read More

I have always liked this statement: "The only difference between a student and a teacher is that the teacher gets the student to where the teacher is only quicker." My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 6 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students since then. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy cello playing and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

For adolescent beginner piano students I recommend 'John Thompson's Earliest Piano Course'. In this series Books I-III build a strong base upon which a student can specialize in different genre and styles graduating from book III. For adult students beginning I would suggest John Thompon's Adult (or Modern) Piano Course. The pacing of this book is far more accelerated and more in keeping with an adult pace to work with.
