Since graduating with my Masters in Cello Performance in 2005 from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, I have been consistently teaching. Most of my teaching for the past 13 years has been going to students' homes. I also encourage the students to participate in yearly recitals and local community engagements throughout the year. I teach Suzuki and Energy Efficient Cello Technique. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Suzuki Cello Book. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. We should be cautious about what we say to avoid any miscommunication. All students should be treated the same. The important aspect would be its ability. Standards would remain the same for all based on individual abilities. In addition, encouragement with some gentle push is crucial. For beginner students I usually start with teaching the fundamentals of how to hold the cello and bow and how to make a sound, using Pizzicato and bow movement. I then introduce the Suzuki volume 1-4 books and make sure that the student learns a piece that will help him or her improve the most but at the same time will ensure an enjoyable and successful learning experience.
