For beginning students, I typically will start them on a method book such as The Yamaha series, and start them on the basic pedagogy of the clarinet and saxophone,ie; putting the instrument together, putting the reed on the mouthpiece, setting the embouchure, etc. I will emphasize the importance of practicing; beginners, 5 times a week for 20 minutes, so they can succeed in learning their instrument. For younger students, I typically assist and follow the method books students are working on. For example, they may use Standards of Excellence or Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements. These lesson books are crucial to teaching the fundamentals as a student is beginning to learn an instrument. I will break away from the books and introduce appropriate solo repertoire. I'm a recently graduated student from Longy School of Music of Bard College with a Master Degree in Clarinet Performance. I started my musical career while been a College student in my native country, Cuba. My performing experience has been very varied, from the Cuban Clarinet Quartet Ebanos de La Habana to the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba and the Ballet and Opera Orchestra of Havana. Once in the United States I had the opportunity to attend to the Woodwind International Festival in Pella Iowa and been part of the Longy Conservatory Orchestra and held concerts with chamber groups and clarinet quartets, also playing in gigs around Boston Area with a clarinet and guitar Duet. I have been my musical journey on clarinet in the second grade, and I have stuck with it ever since! I then picked up tenor saxophone to play in the jazz big band, and I began my piano journey at the end of high school to diversify my musical knowledge! For Flute students I use the Trevor Wye Beginners Book for the Flute. Clarinet I use the Rubank Method books.
