I am an upbeat energetic teacher who loves music and loves teaching. I have played saxophone since I was 8 years old, and I am now in my late 50's. When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. With adult musicians, I let them guide me to their area of interest, and I capitalize on that to guide them to better musicianship, no matter what their skill level may be. Read More

The ultimate goal is always to have a student who is moving forward, reaching realistic goals, and developing a passion for music. I set goals for the next lesson, the end of the quarter, and long term for my students. These goals are set with the student as well so we are moving together as a team towards their next step. I have found that by setting reasonable expectations, setting milestones in which to reach, and by letting the student know ways to measure reaching those mile stones we are able to tailor the instructions to the wants and needs of that student. The level of the student matters greatly to my approach. For younger students, I'll usually use their band music or band methods to supplement class work, as well as offering my own exercises to strengthen fundamentals. Older students often use the Rose, Uhl and Lester etude books. I use Avrahm Glaper's Scales and Arpeggios for my technical exercise or use exercises that I've come up with myself. Read More

I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years.
