For beginning students, I typically utilize Alfred's Basic Lesson Books to introduce basic theory and concepts. These books incorporate fill-in-the-blank and performance-based assessments to ensure understanding. I also create customized flashcards, worksheets, and games to provide fun and interactive opportunities for individualized learning. As students advance, I assign scales and Hanon finger exercises to strengthen finger strength and skill. I have my students spend a great deal of time on rhythmic accuracy, scales, and sight-reading. I create my own lesson plans and provide students with a variety of instructional materials. Students begin each lesson with rhythmic drills and scales with gradual increases in difficulty levels. I prefer using Rubank method books and the Klose Complete Method for the clarinet. For students who are beginners, I usually start with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements 2000 books. Not only are they a great source for fingering charts and basic instrument fundamentals, but they also offer great full band exercises in band balance and togetherness as well. Once the beginner student learns more fingerings and is able to read music from the book faster, I will give the student beginner etudes and studies to build their embouchure and fingering skills.
