This is why I try to not ignore the deeper, more holistic aspects of the art, which is why I emphasize composition in my lessons. I will compose for my students pieces that highlight something they are working on, but I will also assign compositions for my students because kids love it and creativity yields a deeper connection to any given subject than, say, rote memorization. I love kids and do not stifle their creativity, without steering too far away from the task at hand, I like to listen to what they have to say because you never know what valuable information you may learn about their present perspective. I cater my teaching style to each student's age, skill level and personality. I have a patient, relaxed teaching style but I'm always ready and willing to push the student as far as they want to go, encouraging them to try their best. Lessons are usually organized into a section focused on technique and music theory followed by a period dedicated to playing songs together, polishing up repertoire and focusing on playing music in real time, together as an ensemble. For beginning students, I begin by introducing proper technique and the most basic rudiments, start George Lawrence Stone's Stick Control, and introduce basic rock beats. When the student has the fundamentals mastered, we'll begin working on more advanced rudiments and work from Ted Reed's Syncopation. For more advanced students, we will cover odd time signatures, latin grooves, jazz concepts, improvisation, and ways to compose grooves and fills. I encourage students of all skill levels to set goals and bring me materials they would like to learn. Read More

My Teaching experience really started just after graduating high school working with my School's marching band. Although this was not an official position until more recently, my time volunteering surrounded me with successful educators who I observed and learned from. A more recent teaching experience for myself was teaching the University of Maine's (Orono) marching band and percussion section. For one week I worked closely with the a group of 15 students developing skills in percussion while teaching material to be played at school football games. Read More

Every lesson is wrapped up with an obtainable goal for the next week.  This will entirely depend on the student's level and individual goals for the instrument. Everyone has the end product in mind when it comes to learning an instrument.  When someone picks up a Guitar, the learning process is not the first thing they think of: they think of the stage and sounding like their heroes. I'm here to remind all my students that there should never be an end; music is a never ending journey! Read More

The philosophy underlying my teaching method can be summed up this way: If you can say it, you can play it. "Wop bop a loo bop a lop bom bom!" I'll bet I can teach you that rhythm quickly if I say it to you. And once you say it, it's easy to play on the drums. Some people play by ear and others by note, but I think it's best to do some of each. Read More
