I started teaching professionally in Sarasota, FL with a private music school in 1999. I have taught private lessons both at the studio and in students' homes. I also taught group lessons through the Police Athletic League and a local middle school. I love sharing my library of music with my students, and I encourage my students to listen to a variety of music to expand their musical knowledge and to practice, practice, practice! Read More

While in the AF, though, I've been blessed to have several part-time college teaching jobs. I taught saxophone, sax quartet and clarinet for five years at Adams State University in Colorado. For five of my six years in Illinois, I taught saxophone and sax quartet at McKendree University. I've always maintained a private studio of students ranging in age from 8 to 80+. I love teaching all skill levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced students all give me unique challenges as a teacher that I always welcome. Read More

I want to find out each student's skill level, and start from there. For beginners, I try to keep thing informal and fun while teaching basics without putting any pressure to get into the technical stuff like hand technique and reading until they're ready. For intermediate students, I nudged them along with weekly lessons that are challenging enough to keep them engaged - this includes reading, hand technique and limb independence. Read More

The most important thing about playing any instrument is to have fun, so I custom-tailor every lesson in order to see the most enjoyment on my students' faces as possible. While I have hundreds of pages of exercises I have written from which to pull, I will usually hold off even opening my book until I feel the student is ready to have fun with it. Read More

My main philosophy is that every student is different and should be treated accordingly. The methods I use are specifically tailored to each student and can be methods that I have learned or developed myself. I start students off by asking them collect ideas about their instrument and the music they enjoy. From that point, I begin to simultaneously teach technique and musicianship in relation to their expressed interests. The key to my teaching method is that I ask difficult questions and then I give the student time to think and develop an answer. Read More
