I began playing drums at a very early age and performing in my early teens. Throughout my teens I played in various jazz ensembles including the Empire State Youth Orchestra and began my studies at William Paterson in 2012 under the direction of Mulgrew Miller. At William Paterson I gained access to many incredible professional musicians and various performance opportunities in the North Jersey/NYC area. Since moving to North Jersey I've played at various venues such as Shanghai Jazz, Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, Joe's Pub and the Harlem Tavern. Read More

Seriousness and also keeping fun and interesting. Being serious to understand music is a science, and fun not to let it become tedious. Most music students don’t stick to practicing for the mere reason nobody has ever showed them the right way to practice, practice with the mind and not as a robot, and keeping it interesting and challenging. You need to challenge yourself, put yourself to the edge. Read More

I have been an active drummer and musician in the New York City area since graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2009, where I received my Bachelor's Degree. I am currently undergoing my masters at Queens College as well. I've taught in a myriad of environments. My earliest goes back to instructing marching band/indoor percussion programs. My most recent marching program was Fusion Drum Bugle Corps. My college studies helped me branch out musically, and thus I started dabbling in private instruction which I found very fulfilling. I was a graduate adjunct instructor at NYU, teaching primarily concert snare drum. Nowadays, I teach at private music studios (a la School of Rock) and am building up a studio of my own! Read More

I teach because I love imparting knowledge and making connections in this way, and because I love the fundamental building blocks of musicianship and music theory. I have found that with careful attention to a student's character, the possibilities for learning are boundless. I like to let love guide the process, in the sense that I observe carefully the kinds of sounds that a student is fond of, and attempt to structure their learning in a way that empowers them to make those sounds. I am a laid back teacher, but I make sure all students behave and learn. I love when the students enjoy what they are doing, and when I enjoy what I am doing. It's a relationship that you build. I expect the students to practice their craft. I continue to learn as I teach as well. Inspiration is very important. The inspired students are special for they know what they want to accomplish. I have been teaching for a little over a year now. My students range from ages 8 to almost 60. I specialize in helping beginners and intermediate drummers. I truly enjoy watching a musician accomplish something that they may not have thought was possible. I have so much fun playing the drums. It's of utmost importance to me that my students experience that same joy! Drumming is not easy, so I've seen students struggle, but with positive reinforcement, encouragement, passioin and work ethic, I am proud to say that I've seen all of my students thrive! Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
In order to practice effectively one must have a goal. This goal could be as simple as learning out to play quarter notes or as big as performing at Madison Square Garden. From there you identify all of the steps that you must take in order achieve that goal, and break it down in to smaller achievable steps that will inevitably lead to achieving that goal. One of the most important lessons that I learned about practicing is that you can never practice the basics enough. The more time you spend building a solid foundation, the more you will progress and the easier you will find it to move into more complex material.

When will I start to see results?
Everyone will start to see results at their own pace. For students who are just beginning they will see results much faster and much more frequently than a more experienced player. This is because as a musician progresses their goals will become more ambitious and harder to achieve. Therefore taking a longer time to achieve them. However, they become that much more rewarding when they are accomplished. A personal philosophy of mine is not to compare oneself to any other musicians. The focus should be on creating your own unique sound, and learning how to speak with your own voice.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My first drum teacher was the reason that I pursued music the way I did. He created this environment in the class room that made it feel as if I could trust him as if he were family. We would occasionally have lessons where we would just talk for half an hour about music and where we wanted to be with our music in ten years. This allowed me to start to think about my future, and helped me not only to learn music, but to develop life goals, and pursue those on a human level, outside of my music. This teacher helped me to realize my full potential in life, and helped to guide me into attending Berklee College of Music with an open mind and unparalleled ambition that transferred over to many other aspects of my life.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I can't quite pinpoint why it is that I chose the drum set. It was calling me to it, when you're a thirteen year old boy it's kind of hard not to want to play the drums. But, I believe it was the animalistic nature of the instrument that made me want to play it. I wanted to play loud, and I wanted to perform, but the drums gave me a safety net as well. I didn't have to be at the front of the stage with nothing but a microphone. I could do everything for the audience that the singer could, but from behind a drum set. It gave me a sense of security while still allowing me to be the performer that I am. After a couple of years I learned that the drums, as animalistic as they can be, can also be played sweetly, and it was the unlimited possibilities of what a drum can do that keeps me going to this day.
