If they are just starting out I'll start with the basics, how to hold a drumstick, the parts of the drum set, correct posture, etc. I believe that all students regardless of age and level should learn how to read music. Seeing a student take on a challenging piece is more rewarding to me than anything. When I see a student struggling, I will offer the techniques that I would typically use, however there is no ONE right way to do everything.
