My methods depend on both the age of the student and the experience. For example, for a beginner student who's a child I have them start working out of one or two beginner books that I like. Once they have a bit of a foundation, I start working on songs with them. Often it's a song of my choosing, but I always am always up for learning a song of my student's choosing (depending on how difficult it is of course). Read More

I like to emphasize what good practice means and how it relates to my students' goals. I then teach larger musical concepts through the pieces of music that my student wants to learn in order to maintain motivation and interest- music is meant to be fun and enjoyable after all! I'm happy to head in whatever direction my student wants, whether thats continuing to learn songs, making thier own music, or delving more into music theory and intrumental techniques. Read More

Since the age of three, I've been in love with music. Wether it was the home or car, music was a part of my life. In 2005, I graduated from Western Michigan University with a BA degree in music performance. While attending college, I traveled to France, South Africa New York on various occasions. As a professional in Los Angeles, I've played for " Aly AJ ", " Lauryn Hill ", " Mozella " " Lou Gramm " to name a few. Read More

Regarding the actual playing, I emphasize playing slow and steady while keeping the flow of the music, even when it may be tempting to play an easier phrase faster while stopping to play a harder one. I find that progress is fastest playing with that patience in mind, getting a great feel for the music. Also, it's essential to come up with a unique practice plan for the student, accommodating their weekly schedule to find a consistent amount of practice time at their own pace. Read More

My teaching experience is minimal at this point in my career as I have just graduated music school and am now making a shift into the world of teaching drums. During my days in college I volunteered with a music program called SLAM! to teach music to students at TS King Middle School in Silver Lake, CA. I feel as an instructor I really gained a grasp for teaching through the SLAM! program, I also learned that I am very comfortable teaching students of all ages. Read More

For beginner students of drums and piano, we start with the basics. That includes, grasping a solid understanding of common musical terms, and applying them to properly learn to read and play songs. Once a student has a solid grasp of basic music theory, I will begin to challenge them and push them to new heights with new standards, and more challenging pieces to play. When a student has truly become adept, I love to look toward competitions and festivals that will give students that extra push that helps them build motor skills and self-discipline that will be of use in all areas of life. Teaching the most basic concepts in how to build a chord or a scale by using formulas is my favorite way to approach the lesson. An individual's understanding of music is always changing therefore I feel it is better to change with them. Using methods which are proven is important, but the idea of improvisation during a lesson always keeps the interest for me and the student. Of course this depends completely on the age and the experience of a student. Read More
