Instruments: Piano Voice
My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time for school years, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 17 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
Instruments: Piano Flute
A good technical foundation is the hallmark of musical performance, appreciation and motivation. I believe the student witnessing their own progress develop serves a greater motivation than any empty words a teacher can say. Their own satisfaction prompts them to practice more, fed by the very spark of musical desire they possess within them. Practicing is not fun, but playing music is. To be able to pick up new music and play it on the spot are the moments of vindication that makes the student realize their efforts have truly been worth it. Read More

Originally being a self-taught musician, I began with piano and harmonica, then eventually branched out to guitar, bass, banjo, among several others. I have ran sound equipment from an early age as well, learning how to set rigs for full bands and how to mix and master tracks for recording purposes. I have met and played with many famous and unfamous musicians, and find that the highest amount of talent is undiscovered and uncultivated. Read More

I am a passionate and motiviated pianist and instructor and love sharing my love of music with my students! I have been playing piano for 22 years, and graduated from Taylor University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management Systems and Piano Performance. I also earned a minor in music recording technology. I love playing piano for my church's worship services, and have had an opportunity to serve as an accompianist for a wide variety of musicians. Instruments: Piano Organ
The foundation of my teaching is based on listening, which sounds simple. But, it's not always easy! The awareness needed to listen mindfully will set the foundation to enable students to make informed musical decisions on their own. Additionally, practicing is an art form in and of itself, and it's much more than playing pieces over and over again. Practicing efficiently requires listening, of course, and problems solving skills. In addition to presenting the fundamental skills of music making, I address the aspects needed to make informed decisions. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
I've been teaching piano and voice in the Northern Virginia area for over fifteen years. I have worked at studios such as Jordan Kitts Music and Music and Arts, and have done in-home lessons at students homes, which I still do now. My students range from beginners to intermediate level players, and my approach combines popular music with classical, jazz and traditional styles. Of course, in the beginning they learn to play simple songs that they are familiar with like Frere Jacques, Old McDonald, Jingle Bells and so on. Read More

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
For me, the decision to become a professional musician was a gradual one. Music has always been my passion, and as I continued to pursue it and experience the joy of performing and sharing music with others, I realized that I wanted to dedicate my life to this art form. There wasn't one defining moment but rather a series of experiences that solidified my commitment to pursuing a career in music.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I decided to start playing additional instruments out of curiosity and a desire to expand my musical horizons. Each instrument offers unique sonic possibilities and allows me to explore different genres and collaborate with a wider range of musicians.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Yes, music runs in my family. I have 10 siblings so it was a constant symphony growing up. It has been a significant part of our family's bond and shared experiences.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I enjoy playing and exploring various styles and genres, but if I had to choose one, it would be classical music. Its depth, complexity, and timeless beauty captivate me, and I find great joy in interpreting the works of the great composers.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
If I weren't a musician, I would likely pursue a career as a computer programmer. During my college years, I had the opportunity to delve into coding and found it to be a stimulating and creative field. I have always enjoyed problem-solving and the logical thinking required in programming, and I could see myself finding fulfillment in the world of technology.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
One of my dream pieces to perform is the iv-Sarabande from Bach's Cello Suite No. 6. The deep and introspective character of this movement resonates with me on a profound level. It's rich harmonies and intricate melodic lines provide a platform for emotional expression and storytelling through the cello.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
My primary instrument is the cello. I chose the cello because of its rich and expressive sound, and I have dedicated significant time and effort to honing my skills as a cellist.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A typical practice session involves warm-up exercises, technical drills, repertoire practice, and focused work on challenging sections. It includes a balance between technical development, musical interpretation, and creative exploration to enhance overall musicianship.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
Yes, I use specific teaching methods and books tailored to the needs of each student. I choose them based on their pedagogical approach, comprehensive content, and alignment with my teaching philosophy. My favorite is the Suzuki method.

Mastering technique and control is often considered the most challenging aspect. Developing a high level of technical proficiency requires precision, coordination, and consistent practice to achieve fluidity and musical expression.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Some of my proudest musical accomplishments include performing in prestigious venues, and collaborating with renowned musicians. Each achievement represents a culmination of hard work, growth, and memorable experiences.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Yes, several of my students have won awards and achieved special honors. Their success can be attributed to their dedication, disciplined practice, and the guidance provided during their lessons. They have showcased their talent through competitions, auditions, and performances.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Yes, I had a teacher who inspired me through their passion, patience, and encouragement. They showed me the transformative power of music, believed in my potential, and nurtured my love for the art, motivating me to pursue a career in music.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I chose my primary instrument based on its sound, versatility, and personal connection. The instrument resonated with me emotionally and allowed me to express myself authentically through its unique characteristics.
When will I start to see results?
Results vary depending on various factors. Generally, consistent practice and dedication can lead to noticeable progress within a few months, but mastery takes years of focused effort.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Consistency is key. Set specific goals, break down challenging passages, and practice them slowly before gradually increasing speed. Use a metronome and focus on accuracy and quality rather than quantity.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Look for signs of interest and enthusiasm towards music, ability to follow instructions, and basic motor skills development. Consult with a music teacher who can assess their readiness through a trial lesson or evaluation.
