In my experience as a teacher, I have worked on a personal level with my students encouraging regular practice. It's important to get to know the student and keep track of their evolution. I notice that the students who advance the most are the ones who experience playing with other people. Possibly one of the best ways to learn music is being in a band. I encourage my students to have projects like this because it helps them understand quickly what music is all about. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with fundamentals: rhythm, melody, harmony, and dynamics. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

One of my strengths as a teacher is being able to adapt to wide variety of learning styles and skill levels. I don't teach all my students the exactly same way, because not all students learn in the same way. I am all about creating a fun, positive learning environment. I am proud of the fact that many of my students I have today I have had since I started teaching, and I think a big part of that is the relaxed but productive learning environment I strive to create. I like to mix instructional books with opportunities to learn songs outside of the text books appropriate to the student's interests, style, and skill level. For the guitar, I like Terry Carter's Rock Like the Pros, Beginning Class Guitar Method and Intermediate Class Guitar Method. These books have comprehensive practice exercises, including classical and popular music exercises, and great songs of all levels to learn. The Mel Bay and Alfred music method books are also great for guitar or drums. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I also believe in the importance of listening to as many professional recordings as possible of the instrument the student is taking lessons on. Read More

I've found that being flexible and adaptible is most important to me, as everyone learns in a different way. I place a lot of importance on following student interest and goals as well, since it doesn't matter how great your instruction is if you're bored and don't want to keep playing. I think every student should get as much out of their lesson experience as they want, whether that means a more casual experience where you're not practicing too much throughout the week, or holding my student more accountable if they express more ambitious goals. By nature of being a performing musician at a various churches, I have had contact with many youths over the years that are eager to learn music in order to join the worship band. I have a private studio that allows me to teach students individually on a set of live drums and bass guitar. I am well versed with individual, private lessons, in addition to group or paired lessons that can instead focus on theory, concepts, and interpersonal musicianship. Read More
