There's a ton of books about drumset out there. I like to use some of the best ones in my experience that offer us infinite possibilities to create our own individual practice routines. These include: - Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone - Syncopation by Ted Reed - Modern Rudimental Swing Solos by Charley Wilcoxon - The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary As Taught by Alan Dawson More than the books I like to focus on the desire, the flame in the student which drives them to want to play music in the first place... a favorite song or band, and then use these books in order to service that. For beginning students I begin by talking to them about music and what songs they like. We start clapping along and picking out what the drums are doing and eventually begin playing along. A wonderfully laid out book for beginners that are interested in pop music is "The Funky Primer." I also like to teach the reading of rhythms out of a book by Ted Reed called "Syncopation for the Modern Drummer." This is a great book that you can work out of for many many years to come. As students progress, they can move on to drumset studies.  I can focus on whichever style of music interests the student, or  I can present various styles (Rock, Latin, Funk, Jazz, etc.)  All of the ideas learned in the previous lessons will be applied to the drumset.  Areas covered will include: -Beats (Rock, Swing, Bossa Nova, Samba, 12/8, etc.) -Fills -Soloing -Reading Charts -Time/ Feel -Dynamics I am very patient and flexible.  If there is anything that the student specifically wants to learn or doesn’t want to learn, I’m all ears!  I’m here to teach them whatever they are interested in as well as to introduce them to something they may not have experienced before. Ive taught private lessons at music stores as well as at my home studio for the last 20yrs. I truly enjoy connecting with students and helping them reach their musical goals. It is great to see students overcome how to play a piece or a lick and get the confidence to apply their new skills in other musical situations. I started teaching music lessons back when I was 14, when friends would ask for tips or lessons, and local parents wanted lessons for their children. I fell in love with the act of helping others to realize the music inside them, and have been teaching consistently ever since. Learning any musical instrument involves learning about oneself.
