I have been teaching private lessons for about 15 years, as well as camps and workshops. I have served as a clinician and instructor at Drumline camps and with Orchestra. I created the Percussive Arts Institute of Ruston to bring music education to an underserved community and taught around 100 students in an after-school program. My teaching methods are relatively universal. With younger students, I focus more on learning to have fun while learning about their instrument at the same time. The more fun they're having, the more likely they are to stick to it. For adults, I keep this same philosophy in tact, but incorporate more technique, theory, and performance practice into our sessions in order to facilitate the learning curve. My methods to teaching beginners piano is very logical in that it the fundamentals I teach build upon each other. You can think of if like a pyramid. On the bottom of the pyramid we start with the notes of the piano. By the end of lesson one it is my goal for the student to know the name of every single note on the 88-key piano/keyboard. Alongside this structured lesson plan, every student will receive training on proper practicing techniques which help build their sense of guidance, responsibility, and structure.
