I typically teach with method books as references for younger students, occasionally using printouts to give to students to take home and study in order to have a better undertanding of what was gone over in class. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage my students by setting realistic goals and proving homework after each lesson to perfect for the next lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the students, I can successfully tailor my instruction to his or her learning style. Read More

My passion for working with students started in high school. I was a long time counselor at my high school's summer day camp and acted as a leader to a group of kids from 2nd grade to 4th grade. While at Willamette I helped middle schools and high schools in the community by serving as a percussion specialist running sectionals or coaching jazz rhythm sections. Read More

Seeing a student take on a challenging piece is more rewarding to me than anything. When I see a student struggling, I will offer the techniques that I would typically use, however there is no ONE right way to do everything. I encourage independent learning and going beyond the lesson. IF A STUDENT ONLY IS PRACTICING WHILE IN THE LESSON, WE CANNOT ADVANCE AS QUICKLY AS I PLAN. This will result in repeating lessons, which I avoid at all costs. Read More
