For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days ,as I began teaching in professional music school full time 28 years ago and have been consistently teaching students in my home for the last 15 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key point .I like to emphasize for younger students ,as it tends to help student progress and gain passion for the instrument. I've also found that combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the instrument and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

My teaching experience started before I entered college. While I was in high school, I taught private piano lessons to my mother's friend's children and other family members. In addition to teaching private lessons, I was a tenor section leader in my choir and competed in many choral competitions and music festivals. As I entered college, I began to teach more privately, gaining more experience as I went along. Throughout college, I was curious and adventurous; Read More

As I said, all of my students have individual experiences with music and learning! The most important thing to me is progress and passion, at any pace and in any style. A big part of my lessons is setting goals together and checking in on those goals every couple of weeks. Another important thing I try to keep at the center of our lessons is the idea that we only can get as much out of these lessons as we put in. Read More

When I first meet with a student, I usually try to get a sense of their ability level, goals, and the styles of music they enjoy. Since everyone is unique, I tailor my lesson plans to each individual. I can help with planning a practice routine, and with selecting music that is interesting, fun, and hopefully a bit challenging (because thats how we improve)! I will recommend method books, and music books, and write a clear practice schedule at every lesson, and will look for ways to keep my students motivated. Read More

I firmly believe that experiencing music and being inquisitive are invaluable to learning how to play music. Studying music is not just about learning the material and regurgitating it, but discovering why a moment of music is cool and examining what about that moment makes it hit you in the right spot. I will be the guide that the student needs when he or she does not know where to go with his or her studies, but I want to encourage students to bring in music they want to learn, or discuss music that they think is cool and use that as a jumping off point into our lessons. After finishing an apprenticeship in carpentry and becoming a certified carpentry journeyman, I worked as a trade showroom carpenter in Berlin and Vienna. For my mandatory conscription in Austria, I served as an ambulance paramedic. I obtained a bachelor's and a master's in music and dance performance and education at leading universities in Salzburg and Barcelona. From 2008 to 2011, I worked for the University Mozarteum Salzburg, producing, light-engineering, shooting and editing final performances of graduating students using professional studio camera equipment and software. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Do it when you are most relaxed, and when the daylight hours are there. Don't practice when you are hungry or tired. Try to stick to a basic schedule. Try to push yourself to uncomfortable zones.
Work like this is a kind of job and the payment is your confidence in new ideas with regards to sound.
Exceptional work is done when you don't think too hard.
Meditation on your fluidity is key. In the mind's eye, see you smiling and relaxed in all motions of playing, sitting comfortably, and always focused.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
They will look toward the instrument and show interest in the sounds it makes. They will come to you asking if you can buy them a guitar or drums. Most young lovers of music will be a little obsessed with music on the computer, on tv shows and online. I think, for the most part, they show a kind of discipline and strong interest needed to learn the beginning stages of reading music.
They must also have the concentration exhibited with school work and study, that will reflect their ability to sit alone with an instrument and practice.
When will I start to see results?
Depends on the intuitiveness, natural ability, and discipline needed to move the learning forward in the first three months. I do see students with natural ability that don't even practice much with a month. The ones that have both strong innate talent and the ability to practice with the instrument at least 15 minutes a day as someone under the age of 10, as the most exceptional way to jumpstart results and get the confidence needed to show songs and tempo, and technique come to fruition. I like to say, you can be good fast if you love playing even when the teacher doesn't tell you to.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My very favorite teacher, Mr. Colombia, was my grammar school music teacher. He was highly talented and taught us how to sing Beatles songs and wrote spring choral plays with scriptwriting abilities that were moral, ethical and beautiful. He saw talent in members of my family and I loved him for encouraging us and being a wonderful and caring human being. The world lost him ten years ago and I think of his often.
My piano teacher, Mrs. Moris was a kind and funny human being that saw my natural ability and nourished me with different kinds of exercises above the usual note reading. She taught me ear training as well at the age of 9.
I went on to further my musical education at the age of 17 with a woman named Jenny, I called her, and she got me deep into music theory and helped me learn an entire Mozart Sonata which is one of my favorite classical piece of music of all times.
