For most of my beginner students, I start with Alfred's Basic Method Book series (The only exception is Ukulele; I use the Hal Leonard's Ukulele Method Book). Beyond that, I work with each student to decide on songs and techniques that they would like to learn. I also make time in each lesson to introduce students to new music that showcases their instrument. As students progress, students will bring in their own examples for us to discuss together. I strive to create an atmosphere of fun and creativity in my studio. This is done while simultaneously building a strong foundation of technique, posture, and musicality in all of my students, regardless of their age or experience level. I have no personal agenda when instructing. I consider myself merely a means for the student's own personal and musical development. Lesson structure depends on the individual's goals. If the student hopes to nail an audition for a spot in a high school's drumline, then we will work on snare drum technique and concentration during private practice and during performance. Read More

I work very closely with every student customizing lesson plans based on their needs. From the very first lesson, we figure out his/her goals and we write them down. Then I create a lesson plan specifically suited to get them to where they want to be. I often recommend specific songs or artists they should listen to as well as certain books and practice exercises that gravitate towards reaching their goal and most importantly; true potential. I began teaching people how to play instruments when I was in high school, by teaching new students to the band how to play percussion. I then continued teaching once in college by volunteering at local high schools helping new students to the band programs learn brass and percussion. From there I worked with the Rich South high school band director and the Jack Hille middle school band directors. Once I graduated college I taught choir and instrumental music for the catholic school system for two years. Read More

I do that by simply finding out what they enjoy. And when I find what they love I teach it to them. For ex. teaching them how to play their favorite songs or to play the theme song from their favorite tv show. Small things like this are what keeps students engaged and exited about lessons. The excited created bring pure joy to students and that joy bring peace and happiness to me. Read More

For beginning students, I like to stress fundamentals with a twist. I encourage my students to play along with music they like to keep them interested in what they are practicing. As the student progresses, I will either compose a short solo or provide a short solo in which they can apply fundamentals to. For intermediate and more advanced students, I like to let them guide their own instruction. After coming to me with topics they'd like to learn more about, I will provide exercises, musical examples, and pieces to help them assimilate what they have learned with me, to real-world examples. Right off the bat, we will both have at least one thing in common - we are both students of the drums and share a love for learning music. The feelings of accomplishment is what drives you to keep learning and reliving moments of new skill acquisition is the positive feedback loop one needs to constantly grow and never stagnate in being a student of any instrument and the language of music itself Read More
