For beginning guitar I start out with Chris Parkening: classical guitar book...learning finguring styles, rudiments, and notes. We then go into various techniques and develop song repetoire and chording and strumming styles. For beginning piano I start with level one Hal Leonard book for beg. piano and various beginning classical composers: Beethoven, Mozart, Tchakovisky, Jazz, etc. . I split this class into musicianship-learning notes and reading music, fingering and scales, and theory. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding then seeing my student progress and overcome the difficulties of starting to play an instrument. Furthermore, it is very important that each one of my students progresses at their own pace. That being said, I encourage progression by setting realistic goals depending on the student's level. In addition, I create the students curriculum based on the styles of music students prefer as to keep their interest while giving them useful knowledge and techniques for any situation involving playing, improvising, or musical comprehension. I've been teaching music for a little over 5 years (2014). I have started many kids who don't know if they would rather learn guitar, drums, or piano. So I give them a tour of all three and show them the basics before they decide their favorite. I encourage consistent practice and practice methods that ensure that the students always feel a sense of improvement without frustration. Personally I've felt the sense of improvement after practicing but was still more agitated, but that was college, before I started teaching. Read More

My first job late in high school was to Lifeguard, and teach swim lessons. I also taught sports on weekends. I've worked with kids ranging from 6 months to 17, and also have worked with adults, and people with disabilities. I continued to teach, and work with kids for several years following. Times in between these jobs I began giving lessons to children I met through these programs I worked for that needed someone to give music lessons. Read More

When it comes to young children: it is 100% keeping them participating and keeping them having fun. Drums and Cymbals are particularly fun and perhaps the most instrument to play. Playing in sync with each other, color coding targets, keeping time and basic rhythm concepts are my way of keeping children 4-9 involved and wanting to learn more. These are sometimes things so basic you can help them practice at home. Read More

I began teaching in college and focused on motivating younger players to continue to exploring the instrument. I noticed early on that so many young students would stop showing up to lesson after just a few weeks. My goal has always been to expose every student to the potential their instrument has. A lot of this comes with making the lessons reinvent to "Real life". During drum lessons I often have a guitar or bass on me so we can play Example 23 from page 10 in a real musical setting.
