For beginner students I usually begin with listening exercises. We will listen to music and talk about what the drummer is doing, and how we can de-construct that. From there we talk about how that looks written down on paper and explore the basics of drum notation. Within this we will also talk about proper technique. For adults, or students with more experience, i will try to find out where their skills are and what they are interested in learning from me. Read More

I like too see where the study is playing-wise and design a custom learning plan for the student and his/her goals and help them reach their goals quicker with a planned practice schedule. I also start students off with reading which helps them better understand rhythm and being able to read music is a huge plus in todays music world. It also allows the student to get more done from practice sessions in my experience. Read More

When I receive a new student the first thing I do is assess where they are technically and what their interests are. From there I develop custom lesson plans that are design to improve a certain technique while learning new music. For example if a student comes in and really loves Michael Jackson's music but doesn't know how to hold the drumsticks or read music, I will give them basic exercises to improve their lack of technical ability and then we'll apply it to a song. Every single one of my lessons is individualized and focused on YOU and what YOU want to learn. Of course, there are things that I encourage such as posture and proper technique, among many others, yet I will always have a focus on MUSIC and helping you get to wherever you need to learn, not by theory alone but through putting what we learn into practice. I understand that some students want to learn the instruments themselves but without the context of how they function in music, I feel I would be doing them a disservice. Read More

I like to emphasize what good practice means and how it relates to my students' goals. I then teach larger musical concepts through the pieces of music that my student wants to learn in order to maintain motivation and interest- music is meant to be fun and enjoyable after all! I'm happy to head in whatever direction my student wants, whether thats continuing to learn songs, making thier own music, or delving more into music theory and intrumental techniques. Read More

I have a strong connection to music education. I was significantly affected by music teachers at a young age and benefited greatly from strong music education programs. I have taught lessons to many students over the past 9 years and have a great appreciation for the art of teaching. Variety is important to me, and I will introduce as many different styles and genres as possible. Introducing people to musical instruments is very important to me, for the educational and communicative skills inherent in performing music can translate to any facet of life. Read More
