The more fun they're having, the more likely they are to stick to it. My first job out of college was teaching at a charter school where I saw all the students in the school for 9 week periods. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with rudiments on a snare drum before approaching a drum kit. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce them to a small basic drum kit set up using only the snare, hi hat, and kick drum.
