Using a wide variety of repertoire and exercises, I focus on developing a solid foundation for tone production/intonation, articulation, and digital dexterity. At the same time, I encourage students to explore repertoire and style, both for listening and for performing, to help them find the music they really love. I make it a point to ask all students (or parents for my younger ones) to purchase a notepad where assignments, expectations, exercises, tips/tricks can be written down to help them progress during the year and into the following week of lessons. My favorite aspect about teaching is pushing students beyond the limit they place for themselves. That being said there must be a mutual understanding that I will do all I can to help students get over a "learning hump" as I call it- I have access to a plethora of journals, articles, teaching websites, a personal library, all of these materials can be scanned, printed out, emailed and whatnot for the benefit of my students. My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons part-time 8 years ago, teaching primarily young beginning and intermediate students. I have served as a teaching assistant for the 2016 Ervin Monroe Summer Flute Choir Workshop, where I played side-by-side with the members of the flute choir and offered advice and guidance. I have also served as the the primary flute instructor for the annual McCourts Music Fifth Grade Instrument Fittings in Berkley, Michigan for the past 5 years, where I work with fifth grade students teaching them how to play the flute. For beginners who are children I will start with the fundamentals of the instrument (flute or sax) and then from there will introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their level. With adults I like to find out what styles of music they are interested in and instruct them with that in mind to keep the lessons fun and enjoyable while still educational.
