For beginning students, I typically use one method book and one book of simple melodies.  My preferred method book is the Rubank series. The method book teaches the basics, while the melodies and songs keep things fresh and interesting for the student so they want to continue.  For advanced students, I find significant, staple pieces that any advanced musician should have in their repertoire.  This keeps the student engaged, and prepares them for anything down the road in their musical careers. In May of 2014 I graduated with my Master's degree in flute performance from the Yale School of Music. My musical passion is chamber music, and new music. For my beginning students who are children, I may start them with Hal Leonards Essential Elements and/or the Rubank Method. Once they begin to learn the basics and and can grasp the fundamentals, I can begin to introduce solo pieces. For adults, I try to learn about what level the student is and what their interests are so that I can cater my lessons accordingly. For beginning students, I like to start them on the Hal Leonard Essential Elements. I believe it moves at the proper pacing for young children. For intermediate students, Accent on Achievement works well because I find the music is more challenging. Also I require older students to know scales, primarily Bb, Eb, and F major being that they are the easiest to learn. It is from there that I gradually add a new scale (one every few weeks) until ultimately all 12 major scales are learned. Read More

My experience in teaching is still growing. I have previously taught freelance back in 2010 assisting high school students prep for NYSSMA. I have taught toddlers as well as adults since then off and on but am looking to start to teach more consistently and regularly. I also have experience with children and young adults with special needs. I encourage a consistent schedule and regular practice but also like to make sure my student enjoys the music and learns to appreciate the instrument and what they are playing. Read More
