I want to prioritize their own independence within these lessons in regards to choosing their own repertoire or experimenting with their own compositional style so that they can embrace how liberating and fun learning about music and being creative can be, rather than seeing it as a chore! For beginning students, I place a large emphasis on the fundamentals i.e. scales, chord progressions etc. I also start them on solo pieces and like them to choose the pieces they are working on. I believe that if they choose their repertoire then they will have greater love and enthusiasm for the music. I also encourage them to push beyond what they think they can do. I also try to allow my students a chance to play something they want at the end of lessons. As my students advance we add in classical pieces as well as jazz, and improvisation. For beginners children, I like to start with a primer book. Either through the suzuki method or piano adventures. Also, there are instances where I find simple pieces from different composers, put them together into a booklet and start teaching through those while having the student write music theory in a music notebook. For beginner adults, I think its best to start with things they're interested in playing. I know that adults gravitate towards music because they would like to play some of their favorite songs and through that I teach them music, both theory and practice.  Read More
