Having taught many students over the years, my favorite books for young beginners are the Rubank series and Pares Scale book. These give a good foundation and progression and have easy to read fingering charts. Once a student gets going with these I introduce simple duet books so that, by playing with me, they develop a strong sense of tone and intonation. The first solo books I recommend are collections of solo's by famous composers, these give the student the chance to gravitate toward the style and composer they like best. Read More

I have enjoyed teaching since High School, when I traveled to teach students by bus. Later I traveled by car to homes to teach, but have only taught in my studio for over 20 years. I find that the lessons are better where I have all of my wealth of music. I try to relate to each student personally, so they feel comfortable, and enjoy their lessons. For beginning students, I like to focus and builds traditional "executive skills" such as embochure, posture, hand position, ear training, and articulation. Once the student has a grasp of fundamentals, I introduce scales and solo repertoire appropriate to their development. For advanced students, I focus on building upon their knowledge of scales, etude methods, harmony and chordal progressions, as well as solo repertoire--while incorporating elements of improvisation, extended techniques, and electronics.  I play duets with each of my students regularly!
