I have been teaching woodwind students of all ages for more than 10 years, in a variety of settings from public and private schools, individual and small group lessons and concert band and jazz ensembles. I believe that private lessons are a partnership between the teacher and student, and have found that students thrive when they are  inspired by their lessons and experience the success of mastering a fun, new piece of music. All flutist should become proficient in Taffanel and Gaubert 17 Daily Exercises (once a certain level and ability is obtained, this is a requirement for my studio). There are many etude books for any level, and etudes are also a requirement (etudes act as a continuation of method books, which focus on specific technical aspects in each etude). Specifically for students who show a clear interest in pursuing music professionally (at least though a collegiate level), and definitely for any adult student, I will recommend these books to read as study material to help truly understand the physics of playing the flute, and how that relates to being musical: Michel Debost's The Simple Flute, Thomas Nyfenger's Music and the Flute, and Arthur Weisberg's The Art of Wind Playing. I began my teaching days informally when I was still a student at Fairport High School. Some family friends wanted to learn how to play saxophone, so I began teaching them. Next thing I knew, I had a small-time music studio in my parents' basement! I was teaching saxophone as well as jazz improvisation at that time. I took a break from teaching when I went to college, and began teaching again the summer after I graduated. Read More

Instruments: Voice Flute Music

Once your voice is lined up with great technique, your “own” true voice will begin to surface with an increased vocal range, resonance, and heightened flexibility between notes. We will explore who YOU are as a singer and discover what repertoire works best for you. I structure warmups and learning vocal technique through classic vocal methods such as; Vaccai, Marchesi, and Garcia. I also emphasize working through the actor’s process, so you can fully prepare you for any audition or performance. Read More

I have been teaching saxophone lessons ever since I was 15 years old, when I used to mentor other students who were just starting to play. I am comfortable teaching all ages, and have had students in the past ranging from ages 6 to 50. Teaching is a great joy for me; some of my proudest moments have been at student recitals, watching young musicians play! I have found that the best way to inspire students to improve is by giving them performance opportunities and long term goals to strive for. Read More

Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet

My teaching emphasizes development of the most important fundamentals of woodwind technique. Using a wide variety of repertoire and exercises, I focus on developing a solid foundation for tone production/intonation, articulation, and digital dexterity. At the same time, I encourage students to explore repertoire and style, both for listening and for performing, to help them find the music they really love. Methods books I use to help develop technique include: Rubank for all woodwinds Deville for saxophone Klose for clarinet Moise for flute Charlie Parker Omnibook for jazz studies Repertoire for performance can include anything the student requests, as well as basic material in a variety of western and eastern styles.
