For intermediate students I draw from my large collection of music to advance their technique and improve their expression. With more advanced students we work on specific problem areas they may be having such as tone quality, or advanced or alternate fingering techniques using music from classical, jazz and orchestral works. I have my Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance and performed as a part of U.S. Army Bands. Over the years I have taught in music stores, band rooms, community centers, and my home studio. I like to think I'm a laid-back kind of guy, though I can get loud and boisterous sometimes when a student figures something hard out. I wonder sometimes if I don't get more excited about a student's breakthrough than he does! My wife sometimes tells me I have no "indoor voice," lol. I don't give grades (except for my college students, because I have to), but if I did, the grade would be either "A" or "I," as in incomplete, as in do it over until it's great. Read More

For beginning flute students, I use the Trevor Wye flute instruction books, along with the curriculum that is being taught in the student's band class at school. Having patience is key to being a good teacher. I realize many students will learn at different paces so it's important to work with kids on an individual level to make sure they're learning most effectively. Positive reinforcement through encouragement and setting attainable goals is another way of ensuring my students are making progress.
