For all of my students, I stress the importance of fundamentals, and I use various etude studies and the works of Marcel Moyse to develop this.  To further complement the development of fundamentals and to encourage stylistic choices in musical expression and phrasing, music theory, music history, and ear training skills will be incorporated into lessons.  In addition, a portion of each lesson will be spent sight reading duets, which encourages sight reading skills and allows students to become accustomed to a more advanced level of playing. I first find out how the students learns best. Knowing if somebody is hands on, likes to listen, needs to watch, be shown etc. can impact the experience and quality of the lesson. Using analogies is something that has really helped me in my practicing so I enjoy passing that on. Setting realistic short term and long term goals are absolutely essential to progression, along with finding an inspiration. I believe in being very structured with young students, as children thrive on structure. I give precise weekly practice assignments and expect the parents to be involved with their child's practicing. For adults, I like to have them set the tone as to what they want to work on, as adults have goals in ways that children do not. My main focus is trying to teach students HOW to learn music, so that they can eventually create their own methodology based on what works best for them. I have eight years of experience teaching private lessons, so I understand how to craft a curriculum to an individual's needs. Working with hundreds of different musicians has taught me that everyone learns music differently: some through sight reading, others with audio recordings, others still by watching someone else do it first.  We can work on specific topics during our lessons, but I can also give you a bunch of things to review/work on during your own time. These fundamentals include: long-tones (for tone production), scales (for technique), overtone series (for the low/high range of the instrument) and reading music.
