First and foremost, I endeavor to contribute to a students' personal development, regardless of whether or not they intend to pursue music their entire lives. I hope to educate audiences as well as musicians, and ultimately, I want to share my love of music with as many people as I can! I love it when students have ideas about specific songs they want to learn or draw inspiration from, and use their interests to individually tailor their lessons. Read More

I've been teaching woodwinds and strings for about 8 years now, to students of all ages and abilities. In that time, I've worked with students making their very first sounds, all the way to helping my students successfully audition for university music programs (often receiving scholarship!). My training and certification in Music Therapy gives me an additional perspective on how music and musical ideas can be used to improve and assist all aspects of life, and in particular I enjoy working with students who possess learning or developmental difficulties. For younger beginning students, I typically use a method book, such as Accent on Achievement or something similar. For older beginners, I typically use the Rubank beginner's book. With this book, the student learns the fundamentals for their instrument. Once the student demonstrates an understanding of this, we will move on to sheet music. For more advanced students, we will typically use an etude book like Klose to explore the technical aspects of musical performance (such as technique development, phrasing, dynamics, etc.). Read More

I use several levels of method books that may encompass technical concepts (Moyse), orchestral studies (J. Donjon), Selected Duets, Solo works, Aebersold Jazz Studies and custom lesson plans that I create according to the performance level of the student. It is important to be creative in implementing the different levels of cognition to help students effectively retain and use new information. With regards to technical development I encourage all students to practice slowly for accuracy and muscle memory. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Trevor wye's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Also I try to keep them motivated by planning projects like recording a piece or play in front a big public. Read More

I believe every mind and thus every student is different. So especially when teaching something inherently creative like music, I almost always have to be inventive with my pedagogy. Every student has their own interests, learning style, and goals, and as an educator, listening to and really HEARING those is just step 1. Step 2, 3, etc. is to "creatively" construct a curriculum that fits that student; creativity is a requirement. To use specific example to highlight my teaching style, I worked with a boy named Adam from the time he was 9 through about 13. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
To be completely focus on the moment is very important. Is very important to enjoy and have patience. You have to not skip any step. Exercises are to be played slow and once your fingers can do it properly and clean you can go to speed up a little bit till you do it perfectly. Is very important to follow specifications because the way you practice at home is gonna show up at any performance in public. Also as in songs as with exercises. Different parts should be isolated to practice more separately if there is certain weakness or difficulties in the songs. As for saying the student sounds good trough all the song but at the ending doesn't seem to quite nail it. Is necessary to focus specifically in that part and practice it till it sounds properly good, effortless and clean.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Depending in the interest they have. The level of attention they can give. Music is about playing and having fun. So any student can join the lessons by starting with simple exercises. As for more complicated music and exercises can be given upon each student is require in it. The first songs they start with as beginners are more simple songs depending on their level. Simple songs with no complication are songs anybody without a proper preparation can have musical skills that can become better. So there is not an age to start plus music start to give a therapeutic influence in their life's.
When will I start to see results?
You can say the first class it has to be results. The class it will help the student to instantly apply the knowledge but practice at home is important. Beginner lessons are not complicated. Is something students should learn instantly. You can say results are seen from the first class but gradually they start showing more and more results after 2 months. Is important the interest of the student. Is important that he likes the music and the instrument he is gonna learn. Is important to work with the music and exercises that he is interested the most.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Yes I m very fortunate that I was able to have amazing teachers. Some of the times I would travel far just to have a private lesson with the best. They inspired me with their playing that was something amazing developed thru the years. The music that they created was out of this world. Some of my teachers are artist with their own album collections. Also a special connection was developed between teacher and students. So the lessons were inspiring for both teacher and student. For that reason my teachers acknowledge me as being their most passionate student as always I followed the most minimum detail.
