I tailor each of my lessons to the needs and desires of each individual. I am fond of using method books such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Bruce Peterson's Standard of Excellence (or, with school children in a band program, whatever their method book may be), but I also like to bring separate handouts or sheets of exercises, drills, and songs that I have created over the years. I will typically alter my lesson plans according to each student's needs and goals. I love using method books and even beginning band books. For true beginners, it is so important to develop a strong foundation for breathing, posture, embouchure, and finger position. For example, to help practice deep breathing, I have my students lay down on the ground with a book on their stomach. Then, I will ask them to breath while trying to move the book up and down.
