I have been teaching the flute on and off over the past ten years when my full-time career has permitted. I have worked with children, teenagers and adults. I am encouraging, fun, supportive and patient while also challenging my students to give their personal best to their music studies. Like any instrument, the flute requires consistent regular practice in order to gain foundational skills and to progress. I value working with my students on a personal level to determine what their goals are for lessons, and then make a plan to address those goals to the best of my ability. For beginner students, I always focus on building a solid understanding of music reading, rhythm, fingering of notes, and general musical concepts that may be glossed over in a classroom setting (which is where many students begin their musical education). I love seeing my students grow in their knowledge and appreciation of music! Excellence is rewarding, and I teach the process to get there from whatever level we begin. I use positive reinforcement and notice what the student is doing right. Then, I give critique and an action plan to improve performance. It feels good for the student and teacher when they learn the methods to break down what is currently difficult into smaller pieces so that it is both manageable and possible to go further than they thought.
