Standing on stage with great musicians is the most effective way to learn music. That’s because music is an aural tradition, meaning music is taught by ear, often thru singing. Just like language. How did you learn to speak English? Not by reading books, but by jamming with words and speaking with masters of the language. Jamming (with notes or words) is the act of exchanging ideas with another person, a conversation. Read More

My methods differ for each instrument. For piano I will start with Alfred's basic piano course if the student is a beginner. It helps students visualize the basic techniques for sitting and playing the piano in a way that will prevent injury. From there we walk through the book until the student understands how the keys and reading music works. After this, I start to assign different songs and/or assignments that match the student's learning style and interest in music. Read More

I always explore different methods that might fit the age and personality of the student but for keyboard lessons I have found success with the Alfred Piano Method. Instrumental lessons usually follow the method book that is selected by their school band director. Beyond that I have a large library of supplementary music to expand the students interest with new styles and composers.I'm very flexible with the method books and after I get to know the student I can select a method that would work the best for instruction. I have taken classes on pedagogy and teaching artistry in creative ways, such as teaching students to do improvisations and asking questions in order to get them engaged in the learning process. I have played classical, jazz, pop, and latin music, and can teach an array of different genres. Read More

I've been playing flute for over 15 years and have taken advanced private lessons myself for over 8 years. In my own journey as a musician, I've realized the importance of regular practice time and setting short and long term goals. In my time teaching younger students, I've learned that locking down the basics of tone and breath control are crucial techniques for becoming a great musician. It's also important to have a good mix of repertoire between classical and modern/pop pieces. Read More

Having studied music extensively, I have developed an encouraging and growth-oriented approach to teaching. I like to provide music that challenges, delights, and motivates students to practice simply because they enjoy it. Of course, some students respond well when told something needs work and they need to spend more time honing a particular exercise or piece, but with every student it is important that they are recognized for good work.
