In lessons, I concentrate on fundamentals (breathing, tone, technique, tonguing, etc), as these are often shorted in the school classroom and will further enable the student long-term. I strive to make abstract concepts concrete by using actions and icons, especially for younger students. I usually start out using the Rubank Method, but I frequently incorporate some Suzuki and other ear training methods as well. I also like to use Trevor Wyes books for more advanced students. I like to expose all students to a classical repertoire of performance pieces, using basics for beginners and progressing in difficulty as the student gains more control of the instrument. I use a variety of books with etudes, or studies, to give students a strong background in technique while also teaching various musical concepts such as theory and improvisation. Read More
