As much as I discuss with students what to practice, however, I think it’s more important to emphasize how to practice efficiently. The patience and focus needed to execute a song correctly is as much an exercise in meditation as it is about performing music. As I tell my students, the mind is the true instrument. Once they know what the symbols on the chart mean, where their hands have to go, and how a song is supposed to sound, they will have no trouble making music. Read More

I have very high standards for teaching. That is why I did not start teaching until my fourties. At that point I felt that I had both the life experience and skills to be a good teacher. There is a lot more to playing music than just playing the right notes. That is what I call the mechanics of music but the not the soul.Obviously you must start with the basics to get to any deeper level of expression. That is what I am most passionate about. Why does anyone want to play an instrument? My methods are not unusual, although I am a bit. Based on the the students experience and ability, or lack thereof, I'll make suggestions about what music to get. Often they already have music that will work, to which I will add developemental studies of various sorts. For example, I like Bartok's Mikrocosmos which he wrote to teach is nine year old son to play piano. Many things can be learned with no book at all, but reading music is also important. Read More

You become great by how much effort you put into the application of my guidance through your own practice." I cannot make you the performer you want to be. I can only guide you through the process. This is why I am always excited to bring on a new student. Each student I have worked with holds a special place with me. For beginners, whilst working with a Standard of Excellence book, it's important to take the time to work on things on a smaller level throughout. Although working through the books and going onto the next level is the goal, I find it imperative ensure that the techniques are being fully utilized along the way. For example, we don't want to just read the notes and play along, we want to make sure that articulations, tone, breathing techniques and fingering is also being focused on. Read More

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
One of my proudest musical accomplishments is becoming an artist in my own right. This journey has involved not just honing my technical skills but also developing my unique voice and style as a musician. I take great pride in my ability to connect with audiences through my performances and share the joy of music with others. Additionally, I've been fortunate to perform with renowned orchestras, such as the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, and to have the opportunity to teach and inspire students in their musical journeys. Each of these experiences has contributed to my growth as an artist, and I am excited to continue evolving and sharing my passion for music with the world.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Yes, I had a remarkable teacher who profoundly inspired my musical journey. My flute instructor during my undergraduate studies not only possessed incredible technical skills but also had an infectious passion for music that was truly captivating. She encouraged me to explore my creativity, emphasizing the importance of emotional expression in performance. Her personalized approach to teaching made me feel seen and valued as a student. She took the time to understand my unique interests and challenges, which helped me build confidence and find my own voice as a musician. Witnessing her dedication to her students and her ability to connect with each one on a personal level motivated me to pursue music not just as a career but as a way to inspire and uplift others. Her guidance has influenced my teaching style today, as I strive to create that same supportive environment for my students.

When will I start to see results?
The timeline for seeing results varies from student to student, as it largely depends on individual practice habits, commitment, and prior experience. Generally, you can expect to see initial improvements within a few weeks, especially if you consistently practice and engage with the material. Many students notice enhancements in their sound, technique, and confidence after about one to two months of regular lessons. As you continue to progress and challenge yourself, the results will become more noticeable, such as mastering new pieces, improving your tone quality, and developing your musical expression. Remember, progress in music is a journey, and celebrating small achievements along the way is essential for maintaining motivation and enthusiasm!

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is excited about learning music, that’s a great indicator that they’re ready! Generally, children around ages 8 to 10 and at least 4 feet tall (48 inches) are often prepared to start flute lessons. Their enthusiasm and interest are key signs that they will engage with the material and enjoy the learning process!
