I tailor my teaching style to each student.  When something clicks for them, I stick with it and adapt to keep the student engaged, interested, and passionate about music.  If I find a student is not fond of a certain book or solo, we change course together. For elementary students and some middle schoolers, I usually either work out of Standard of Excellence or Essential Elements book 1 to begin their studies or continue where they left off. For high schoolers and more advanced middle schoolers, I like to have them play solo flute pieces that fit with their ability level. For beginning kids, I usually start with three or four major scales and a couple of other basic routines to improve their knowledge of the notes and their tone. One book I like to use is Carl Fischer'sFlute 101: Mastering the Basics.Once the student seems to have made progress in these areas, I introduce them to one very simple melody from a well known song, such as O Christmas Tree or Fur Elise.
