To make the learning experience fun and engaging. I first introduce concepts; then connect to well known songs and music that allow you to understand and appreciate the vital concepts and themes being illustrated. Together we set realistic goals, learn from where we may have missed the mark, and celebrate our achievements. This allows me to tailor your lesson so that you may gain the absolute most at of each and everyone. Read More

I am an acoustic percussive guitarist currently working in the greater Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. I have been teaching guitar almost as long as I've been playing guitar, starting with just friends and family but eventually moving on to support myself as a private instructor. I have apprenticed with UDC Jazz Band Guitarist Pete Muldoon and Matt Kelley (of the blues band "Big Boy Little"). I supported myself in highschool by working in DC's local guitarshop, which is where I started teaching my first students. Read More

For teaching children I use a mix of method books (Hal Leonard and Mel Bay) and playing chords and songs so that while the student grows with fundamental information, they also have fun and play songs they know and can relate to. Once the student progesses past basic method books and can play basic songs, I move to teaching scales up and down the neck in the interest of improvising and/or more advanced songs and playing styles depending on the interest/directoin of the student. While I am a classically trained musician, I believe that a student will best learn when presented with material that they are passionate about. A student's curiosity will drive learning far more than any other source, so any directions I can help foster in a student, I will take that opportunity. If students are struggling, I have a wealth of resources and materials of my own which I can offer for new routes of study, or lesson plans to stimulate learning. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to high school when I started teaching cello to students in my school district's orchestra program. Since then, I have continued to teach freelance through personal connections, Musika, and various non-profit organizations. Furthermore, I am currently in my internship to become a board certified music therapist, and have experience teaching music to individuals with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and dementia/Alzheimer's. I challenge my students to reach their potential while making sure they have the room to thrive in a safe and fun environment. Read More

I prefer to teach beginners utilizing the Pepe Romero and Christopher Parkening technique. I also prefer teaching all beginning students using the classical method as this provides more variety using the left and right hand techniques. Should students wish to continue on with different styles suchas jazz, blues, latin jazz and so forth, having the left and right hand techniques will make the students far more versatile. Another key aspect to my teaching is figuring out students'time management. Read More

I sincerely believe that even the most basic material can be made to "sound good", and I stress this from the beginning. I'm big on playing duets. I'll tend to toss in tidbits about the physics of sound, or how muscle memory works. I like to engage the curiousity of the student in this way. I like to ask students about what music they like, and what they would like to do--play in a school talent show? Read More
