I have experience both with written music and tabs, so student preference will determine which route to take. I've always found lessons to be more effective when instructors utilized the song method; to me, introducing elements of theory through this method makes the information "stickier." I have taught private lessons for 15 years. I emphasize the practice makes perfect rule of thumb. I tell my students you're not studio/performance ready until you can play through a song 10 times without error. I encourage improvisation. I always say if you can count to 4 you can start learning in less than 10 minutes. I stress the importance of practicing every chance a student gets.
